The Real Measure of Trading Success: Beyond the Flashy Lifestyle

Trading is much like having a toolbox. You can own the most expensive, comprehensive set of tools in the world, but if you don’t know how to use them properly, they’re just taking up space in your garage.

As a trading mentor since 2018, I’ve seen countless traders fall into the same trap. They collect strategies like badges of honour, convinced that having more trading strategies is the key to success. But here’s the truth: it’s not the quantity of strategies that determines your success – it’s how well you manage your trades.

Let me be clear: I have numerous profitable strategies that I’ve developed and refined over years of trading, including my time as a prop trader in London. I could hand them all to you today, complete with exact entry and exit points, precise indicators, and detailed market conditions. But would that make you a profitable trader?

The uncomfortable answer is: probably not.

Here’s why:

  1. Emotional Control

Every strategy works differently under pressure. Your ability to stick to the plan when real money is on the line matters more than the plan itself.

  1. Risk Management

A strategy is only as good as its execution. Understanding how to properly size your positions and set your stops is crucial. Remember, we always aim for a 1:3 risk-reward ratio – but maintaining this discipline in live trading is where many falter.

  1. Market Context

Knowing when NOT to trade is often more important than knowing when to enter. The best strategy in the world will fail if applied in the wrong market conditions.

  1. Trade Management

This is where the real money is made. It’s about knowing when to:

– Scale out of positions

– Move your stop loss

– Let winners run

– Cut losses short

In our 12-week programme

In our 12-week programme, we spend considerable time on these aspects. Why? Because I’ve seen traders with basic strategies succeed through excellent trade management, while others with sophisticated strategies fail due to poor execution.

Think of it this way: A strategy is like a map, but trade management is your ability to navigate. Having the best map in the world won’t help if you can’t read it properly or if you panic when you hit the first roadblock.

The Real Focus Should Be On:

  • Developing rock-solid trade management skills
  • Building emotional resilience
  • Understanding market context
  • Maintaining trading discipline
  • Keeping detailed trading journals

Does this mean strategies don’t matter? Of course not. But they’re only one piece of the puzzle. The real edge in trading comes from your ability to execute consistently and manage your positions effectively.

So next time you’re tempted to hunt for that “perfect” strategy, remember: the best strategy in the world is only as good as the trader wielding it.
